Analysis Of Kill A Mockingbird Essay -- To Kill a Mockingbird, White
The book notably opens with an immediate instance of self-delusion: tricking the reader into believing that Maycomb is just an old, ordinary, and quiet town through description of the townââ¬â¢s history, when in reality, it was teeming with prejudice and racism. The reader immediately leans about this sleepy southern town where ââ¬Å"a day was twenty-four hours long but seemed longer. There was no hurry, for there was nowhere to go, nothing to buy and no money to buy it with, nothing to see outside the boundaries of Maycomb Countyâ⬠(Lee 6), however the reader slowly begins to realize that thereââ¬â¢s more to the town than what meets the eye, as ââ¬Å" it was a time of vague optimism for some of the people: Maycomb County had recently been told that it had nothing to fear but fear itselfâ⬠(Lee 6). Up until this point, any first-time reader was probably thinking of a dreary, yet pleasant town where nothing really happened. However, this allusion to Rooseveltââ¬â¢ s fireside chats places this narrative in the 1930ââ¬â¢s, and this is the detail that causes the reader to put the two ideas together. Any time before the late 60ââ¬â¢s in a southern town does not bode well on the topic of acceptance, especially the issue of racism. This skepticism is later confirmed through Mr. Radley using a racial slur to accuse a black man for trespassing on his territory. Overall, the beginning of the book is a great example of self-delusion in order t... ... middle of paper ... ...tside the courthouse after the trial, and Jem was instantly reminded of the verdict: Jem was suddenly furious. He leaped off the bed, grabbed me by the collar and shook me. ââ¬Å"I never wanta hear about that courthouse again, ever, ever, you hear me? You hear me? Donââ¬â¢t you ever say one word to me about it again, you hear? Now go on!â⬠(Lee 331). In the face of bigotry, Jem initially refused to accept reality. He refused to admit that, even though Maycomb was the town he grew up in, even though it was where he called home, he was completely surrounded by injustice. Jem deluded himself rather than accepting the fact that the world is a lot harsher, crueler and just more unfair than he thought. Itââ¬â¢s a common theme across the book that people canââ¬â¢t accept the truth and choose to ignore it. And although the book takes place in the 1930ââ¬â¢s, this self-deception is still present.

What explains the demise of the Bretton Woods system Essay
What explains the demise of the Bretton Woods system - Essay Example The joint venture brought about a system wherein countries having problems in balance of payments can solve it because of one of the feature of fixed exchange rates in the agreement. This has laid to an economic reconstruction in Europe for a very long decade which in turn gave rise to capitalist expansion, which has not been seen till date. This gave an added boost to the global economy where mostly in the capitalist countries, the standard of living of the working class has improved to a very high extent. (Bordo & Eichengreen, 1993). In the period of post World War 1, majority of the countries had a tendency to go back to the previous situation of financial stability and security as it prevailed before such wars were held. The old gold standard were again preferred and every country tried to incline towards it and by 1926 all the leading economies again established the system and accordingly the circulating money of every nation had to be geared by gold reserves and foreign currenc ies to a huge extent. But while implementing the gold several steps were undertaken mistakenly as a result of which the economic and financial relations collapsed leading to the Great Depression in 1929. In order to reduce the deficit in payment balance by deflating its currency every single country gave a boost to its export product to increase its competitiveness in productivity. This idea fell in place and was running successfully till the countries continued deflating their currencies. This over laid phenomenon marked an international deflation competition which led to unemployment among masses, enterprises were rubbed out of bankruptcy, many credit institutions failed and also hyper inflation was noted to occur in various countries concerned. (Kenen, 1994; Moggridge, 1980). Due to this phenomenon of Great Depression, several conferences who were dealing with the world monetary problems ended up in failure in the decade of 1930s. But every country tended for a stabilizing system that rectified mistakes which became one of the evident phenomenons. After this, several plans were made in order to build an innovative monetary system and an institution that will supervise all sorts of actions and financial hazards. During the war time conditions, all of the initial negotiations happened. (Kenen, 1994; Moggridge, 1980). In Bretton Woods, New Hampshire (USA), an international conference took place in 1944. This conference was attended by 44 countries so as to restructure the international finance and currency relationships. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and The International Bank For Reconstruction And Development (IBRD/ World Bank) was created by the participants of this conference . In addition, they also accepted the fact of implementing a system of fixed exchange rate with the U.S dollar as the leading currency. Harry Dexter White, the American Minister of State in the U.S treasury and the British Economist John Mayard Keynes were responsible to devel op the plans for the Bretton Woods system. They also stated that they want to establish a system which would be acceptable by all the nations. The ideas of Harry Dexter and Keynes always happened to be very similar to each other. The White Plan supplements that a Bank for Reconstruction and an International Stabilization Fund should be put up. This was similar to what Keynes has described in his plan. But there was a little difference which got reflected in Keynes plan was he wanted to vest the IMF ideas with possibilities to create money and with the authority to take actions on a very large scale. Whenever there will be imbalances in the balance of payments both the sides, that is, both the debtors and creditors must change their policies. Countries that have their payments in excess should increase their scale of imports from the countries

Survey of Modern Art Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Survey of Modern Art - Research Paper Example The essay "Herbert Boeckl - Survey of Modern Art" discovers Herbert Boeckl and his art. During World War I, he began art as an autodidact while still participating in the army, which saw his career spanning to the time of reconstruction after 1945. In this period, he portrayed feminism through the way he depicted the suffering of women and children as casualties of war. He later studied in Berlin (1921-2) and Paris (1923), where he realized the classicism of Cubism which strongly distinguished his artistic strategy from both the graphic logic and consistency of Art Nouveau. On many occasions, he made trips to Paris where the art of modernity opened itself to Boeckl. He as a result of this became the chief delegate of meaningful, contemporary painting in Austria, specializing mainly with figural subjects and paintings. Following the study trip, the root for an innovative tectonic method to symbolic painting was acquired. He modified the typical classical trend with a hot impasto appro ach which comprehended the human body as a shipper of significance in terms of occurring issues, as is shown by the art in the analysis chain. In 1927, Boeckl took part in the exhibition in the Vienna Succession and achieved his first significant successes. He became a significant teacher for many prominent Austrian painters and a professor at the Academy, running the evening life-drawing classes, before becoming principal in 1945/1946 and again from 1962 to 1965. Boeckl came back to painting in 1945. ... As a result of his experience and interaction with the frescoes, he came up with a sequence of sacred frescoes in European Modern Art. This influenced him as thus the painting of the Angel Chapel of the Seckau Abbey in Styria between 1952 and 1960. Herbert Boeckl died in the mid sixties in Vienna. While still at school, Boeckl took his first steps in his artistic career, making copies of nineteenth-century landscape paintings in Klagenfurt Provincial Museum. His landscape paintings were symbolist in mood and secessionist. While serving in the army, his pictures began to show an expressive intensification, that he showcased in the exhibitions of the War Reporting agency. His portrait of Grimschitz was first exhibited at the Carinthian sculpture Association, which as well showcased the works of Egon Schiele (Batliner, 1). His work covers most if not all genres of painting such as religious paintings, portraits, nude, mythological histories, still life and landscape. He mostly used oil canvas in his artistic work. The work of Boeckl can be categorized into three distinct stages that are objectivity phase, the expressionistic illustrations and the concept of realism. Boeckl paintings and sculptures also display feminism through the gracefulness and propinquity in which he expresses the physical existence of the female body. The expressionistic pictures were Boecklââ¬â¢s first works and conveyed highly expressive style of painting with thick colour. It also included impasto paint appliances. The expression period was 1918-1920 which marked the beginning of his skilled life. He adopted pastose brushstrokes to make his work wealthier in detail, thus

For instance, in the legal entity, the government of UK has brought in energy saving organizations like ââ¬Å"Green Taxâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Change Levyâ⬠on the use of energy to lessen carbon dioxide by 30% and distributed subsidies to make improvements on subsidies. This has affected M&S positively in such a way that the company has been forced to launch an incentive policy in which stores can maintain the value of 15% of all savings it makes and above its moves. The move helps the company to save about 10% of its energy (Moiz, 2010). Formative assignment - Organisational Culture Essay
Formative assignment - Organisational Culture - Essay Example The employees of the organization need to follow the rules and regulations in an effective way so as to maintain uniformity and evenness. Apart from this, the employees might try to present their inner ideas and information in front of all so as to enhance the quality of the product lines of the organization. Only then, the range of customers might get enhanced resulting in amplification of the entire turnover and net income of the organization (Empire Ltd) in this competitive market. Introduction The main aim of this report is to analyze and evaluate the importance of organizational culture. Other than this, the report also evaluates the ways by which human resources get influenced by culture of the organization. Side by side, the ways by which organizational socialisation is affected by the culture. To analyse all these crucial parts, the report is divided into five parts including literature review, data collection methods, finding and discussion along with a conclusion. Culture i s described as a sort of social glue that helps an individual to behave within an organization or society. Along with this, culture of an individual gets highly affected by the norms, beliefs, rules, regulations and attitudes attained from the ancestors. Due to which, the behaviour and thinking power of an individual widely varies from one individual to another. Thus, it might be stated that culture is a distinctive pattern of shared beliefs, values and norms that helps in shaping socialization, practices and rules of a specific group. However, it is the culture or attitude of an individual that helps in holding a group or community of individual together (Bratton & et. al. 2006, p. 234-267). Literature Review According to the author Bratton, organizational culture is described as a set of beliefs, values and assumptions that helps in the employees to tackle or handle any specific situation. It is the organizational culture that helps in enhancing the potential and devotion of the e mployees towards work. As a result, it helps in improving the performance of the employees thereby amplifying the total turnover and profit margin of the organization. Other than this, it also acts as a sense of certainty that helps an individual to deal or handle the challenging situations of the environment. Apart from this, organization culture also acts as a controlling mechanism that helps in presenting desired behaviour so as to maintain a uniformity and consistency within the concern. This might help an organization to retain its human resources for longer period of time resulting in improvement of its sustainability and competitiveness in the market among other rivals. Side by side, it also assists in maintaining a stable organization thereby fulfilling strategic goals and objectives. So, it is the organizational culture that helps an organization to expand its portfolio in the market among other competitors (Buchanan & Huczynski 2007, pp. 4-8). Hence, it might be depicted t hat organizational culture presents a sense of identity to the employees that enhances their willpower and dedication towards the responsibilities. Such type of organizational culture is also viewed within the organization of Empire Ltd and also among its employees. So, in spite of being such a small one, it holds a sustainable position in the market amo

Reflective Diary Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Reflective Diary - Coursework Example These food places are called fast casual and have become a threat to fast food places and the traditional restaurants. The second key issue described in the article is how pubs, specifically those in London, are enjoying more visits from customers due to an adjusted family-friendly menu and dà ©cor. It seems that pubs have upped their food offerings and have started including food items for the entire family. Moreover, they have updated their interiors so as to be cozier and family-friendly. Because of these changes, adults have started bringing their kids along and pub owners are starting to get a new reputation as a family-oriented food establishment, other than a place where one can enjoy drinks with friends. Aside from these two significant issues, other key issues could be gathered from the article. First of these is the effect of fast casual food places on fast food joints. People still find fast food places convenient, especially those who want to grab something to eat because they are too busy to sit down and enjoy a meal. Second of these is the effect on traditional restaurants. People also like full service restaurants because the atmosphere is more conducive to having conversations over a warm and complete meal. Still, as the study has discovered, these same people would appreciate a place where the speediness in fast food joints and the comfortable ambiance of traditional restaurants can be enjoyed at the same time. This is why fast casual restaurants are now becoming popular among consumers. The other sub issue is the sudden popularity of pub and hotels because of the way they reinvented their service. Aside from changing the atmosphere in their establishments, pub owners have also started improving the food that they are offering to the customers. Instead of continuing to focus on adult customers, they have now expanded their service to also providing meals for

Charachter Analysis Atticus Finch Essay Example for Free
Charachter Analysis Atticus Finch Essay In ââ¬Å"To Kill a Mockingbirdâ⬠by Harper Lee, Atticus Finch is a man who fights for what he believes in. He is very strong willed and always the one who will stand up for what is right, not what the most popular thing is to do. He also is often reffered to as the wisest man in his town. Atticus believes in equality among people. In his mind all people are equal and deserve equal treatment no matter what race they are. Atticus tells Jem and Scout, his two children, not to judge people until you walk in their shoes. Atticus is also a defense lawyer for his county of Maycomb. Durring his case with Tom Robinson, the black that was accused of raping a white girl, Atticus tries to change the injustices and racism in his small hometown. Atticus is a older male, about 50 years old, with a darker hair color that is turning gray as he ages. He wears glasses because his left eye is nearly blind. He said ââ¬Å"Left eyes are the tribal curse of the Finches. He is also rather tall. His two children were once ashamed of him, because he didnââ¬â¢t fish or hunt, like the other childrens fathers, due to his age. But as they grew, they began appreciating him not for the activities he did on the weekend, but his morals and beliefs. Atticus is one of the most loyal, humane, and consistent with his views and beliefs than any other character in the novel. Although he is looked down on and mocked by many characters in the novel for his kindness towards the ââ¬Å"Negrosâ⬠, the people of Maycomb still respect him and keep re-electing him to be their representative in the State Legislator. Durring the trial with Tom Robinson, Atticus Finch defendes him to the best of his ability despite significant difficulties from the community. Since it was back in the time of civil unrest and racial segregation. This had a huge impact on the community, as Atticus Finch was a highly respected attorney in the white community, who ended up drawing the most adoration and respect from the entire black community for his efforts to stand up for the truth regardless of race. Atticus is a strong willed man who stands for what he belives in. His thoughts do not change because of a persons skin color. He is kind and understanding and helpful to his children as well as anyone else who may seek for help. He is a well respected man in Maycomb, because he stands for what he believes, not the popular beliefs.
